I think the idea of confidence is often misconstrued. In my experience, many people view confidence as a product rather than a state. A product of skills, experience, time and although these things help build confidence, I believe it is more of a state of mind.

The crazy thing about confidence is that it affects every aspect of your life. Your relationships, business or otherwise are affected by your self-perception. Your finances, fitness and overall health are all affected by how we view ourselves and narrative we hold about who we are and what we can accomplish.

Confidence around my business is always something I’m working on. Some days my self-belief and narrative about who I am is strong, empowered and full energy – while other days I have to really work to build that energy.

Your business may be stagnant right now. You have read every book or watch every YouTuber and you’re putting in the work. You are devoting hours to your craft, your skillset and in build, your network but things aren’t moving in the direction you want. Things aren’t picking up as fast as you imagined. You want things to change but you’re not sure how.

What if I said that it was your mindset stopping you?

What if I proposed that a couple shifts in habit and ways of thinking could dramatically improve your business?

I coach students one on one. I help designers earn more money, free up more time and choose the right clients. Yet, before we even touch on income, clients or time management, we start with mindset training. We have to believe and see what it is possible in order to even get close to reaching our potential.

Confidence in yourself is the first step to any form of success.

Here are some practical tips to boost your confidence.

Build Confidence through Meditation

I believe meditation is the first step to self-love and belief in what you do. Meditation does not have to be a large commitment, as a few minutes a day has been proven to drastically improve moods and lower stress.

Meditation can help use transform a lack of self-esteem into inner confidence, self-acceptance and self-belief.

I use meditation to actually get to know myself, my preferences as well as likes and dislikes. I use meditation to understand situations with less distortion, more compassion and acceptance.

You must be thinking wow that is great Danielle but we’re talking growth in business.

Whenever I’m in a bad mood and I send a message to a client, I always get a negative response. This is so true for me that even when I try to be super positive in my message, my mood takes over and each time I receive something less than optimal from my client.

I use to try harder when I didn’t feel amazing. I use to send more out proposals and work twice as long to compensate for these not so positive feelings. Instead of looking inwards and dealing with these feeling I tried to fix them outwardly and it just doesn’t work.

Meditation is the work and foundation I use to build a strong business. It allows me to know when to speak, who is a good client for me, what working conditions will make me happy. In knowing this I am confident.

You can’t be a good contractor without being a good version of yourself. This is true for everything – you can’t be a good partner, without being a good version of yourself. So the first step to confidence and radiating positivity that people will gravitate to is being in touch with yourself.

Here are some tools I use for meditation

Build a Morning Routine

A morning routine sets the tone for your day. In my experience, a large reason for self-esteem issue comes from a lack of perspective. It’s really hard to see our small successes.

A morning routine helps to cultivate a sense of success right in the morning. We often don’t need to work any harder to reach our goals but work smarter. Creating a quantifiable sense of success is a great way to transform mundane tasks into a confidence building tool.

We only have a certain amount of will power when we wake up each morning and it slowly drains way as we make each decision. Try to have the first hour of your day be as consistent as possible.

My morning routine

  • Wake up and make my bed
  • Meditate
  • Brush my teeth and wash my face
  • Mini Workout
  • Drink water and take vitamins
  • Plan my day
  • Shower
  • Eat

Read even more

As a person with ADHD, reading a physical book is often a very tedious activity. Since Amazon brilliantly released audible, I’ve been listening to so many books throughout the year.

The power of books is that they help us get out of our own mind and into the mind of someone else. Ideally, we should read books from people we admire and respect.  Not every book has to be on self-development or business but they should add value to your life.

This year I stopped watching shows or movies and decided during any idle time to listen to books. This has jumpstarted my imagination again as I have to create visuals and content for everything I listen to.

In terms of confidence, listening to audiobooks has given me practical business and life tools to bring into my everyday. Many books give us a system to work with. These systems allow us to feel more prepared in new situations – for example pitching a new client, negotiating contracts, dealing with conflicts. Instead of approaching these events blindly, listening to these books has given more confidence as I approach these events with a method or system.

Here are some of my favourite audible books.
